Born in São Paulo, Richard Vairo found the ideal stage in the United States to transform his passion for business into a thriving success story. As the driving force behind Richards Brazilian Sausage, Richard leads a robust operation based in Miami, supplying over 3,000 supermarkets—including major chains like Price Choice, Presidente, Bravo, Sabor Tropical, Seabra Foods, Sedano’s, and Key Food. His portfolio spans premium Brazilian cuts like picanha and fraldinha, seafood such as shrimp and cod, and unique items like Feijoada Mix and seasoned sausages.

A Journey of Innovation and Resilience
Richard’s journey into the business world began in the 1990s after earning degrees in International Trade and Law in São Paulo. In 1994, he launched his first company in the U.S., working in the technology sector and representing brands like Motorola, reaching sales of 1,200 cell phones daily.

Despite his success in tech, a pivotal moment in 2012 shifted his focus to the food industry.

“A sausage company approached me to help them market their product. That’s when I discovered my passion for food manufacturing and distribution,” Richard recalls.

In 2013, he acquired the company that would become Richards Brazilian Sausage, transforming it into a household name in the American market. Over the years, his team implemented strategic production improvements, expanded operations, and built a robust distribution network. Today, the brand serves over 3,000 supermarkets and numerous restaurants across the country.

Even the challenges brought by the pandemic became an opportunity: the company reported a 38% growth during that time. “Our preparation and focus on quality allowed us not only to meet rising demand but also to maintain sustainable growth, which continues to this day,” Richard notes.

Quality as a Priority
Richards Brazilian Sausage is known for its commitment to quality, offering products ranging from American and Argentinian cuts of meat to Portuguese cod and Brazilian staples like cheese and tambaqui.

“Consistency and excellence are critical in a competitive market like the U.S.,” Richard explains. With a dedicated fleet and refrigerated warehouses, the company ensures seamless delivery to supermarkets, restaurants, and catering services. Among its most popular items are picanha, fraldinha, sausages, and seafood like cod and shrimp.

Navigating Challenges with Brazilian Suppliers
Despite maintaining strong ties to Brazil, Richard emphasizes the difficulties of working with Brazilian exporters.

“The lack of consistency and loyalty in supply chains is a major challenge. Many suppliers prioritize domestic markets when the dollar fluctuates, which impacts our operations here in the U.S.,” he explains.

Still, Richard has managed to keep the essence of Brazil alive in his products, from signature cuts to items like farofa, condensed milk, and tambaqui, which have captured the taste buds of American consumers.

The Man Behind the Brand
At 50, Richard Vairo exemplifies entrepreneurial success and a balanced life. Married with two children, he lives in South Florida and takes pride in blending Brazilian tradition with an American lifestyle.

“My family is my safe haven and greatest inspiration for continued growth and innovation,” Richard shares.

Advice for Entrepreneurs: The Power of Branding and Visibility
Richard believes the sales process doesn’t end at delivery but at the moment consumers choose his products off the shelf.

“Branding goes beyond selling to supermarkets. It’s about ensuring the consumer recognizes and trusts the brand. Communication channels like Acontece Magazine are vital in helping Brazilian products connect with nostalgic customers. Consumers need to know where to find our products, and visibility is key to making that connection,” he advises.

Growth and Future Prospects
With a strong operation spanning imports and exports—including meets imports and American chicken exports to China—Richards Brazilian Sausage has earned recognition among American consumers.

“Our products, such as sausages, tambaqui, and specialty cuts, have been widely accepted in the U.S. This reinforces our commitment to quality and innovation. We continue to invest to meet market demands and grow sustainably,” Richard concludes.
